Steven Cummings, MD,  Executive Director of the San Francisco Coordinating Center talks about the important role that mobile research nurses have in conducting clinical trials remotely.

Dr. Cummings is a lead investigator of the TOPAZ study,  that involves assessing patients with  Parkinson’s disease. As Dr. Cummings notes, the neurodegenerative nature of the condition means that individuals will have difficulty with some fine motor skills needed to conduct a clinical trial remotely but those concerns, as well as assessing treatment compliance and the patient’s health, can be addressed with the use of mobile research nurses. For the TOPAZ study, PCM trials were used to provide Certified Mobile Research Nurses (CMRNs) throughout the country.

CMRNs would also be a possible option for numerous rare condition that will alleviate the need for patients to travel to a research center to be part of a clinical trial.
