Kathleen Bogart, PhD, Associate Professor of Psychology at Oregon State University, discusses how physicians can help rare disease patients manage their mental health.
Dr. Bogart recommends that physicians screen all rare disease patients for mental health as this population is susceptible to developing depression and anxiety. Additionally, Dr. Bogart encourages policy makers and educators to increase the focus on training counsellors to be equipped to help rare disease patients. This is particularly important for adults with rare diseases who unfortunately tend not to have the same level of social support as younger rare disease patients.
