Shruti Chaturvedi, MBBS, MS, from Johns Hopkins and X. Long Zheng, MD, PhD, from the University of Kansas Medical Center, discuss how to manage thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) during pregnancy.
TTP is a rare hematologic condition that can potentially be life-threatening if not managed properly. One of the triggers for a TTP flare-up is stress, such as that observed in pregnancy.
As both TTP experts explain in these videos, if TTP is diagnosed prior to pregnancy, then TTP can be managed and it is not a contraindication for pregnancy. However, the stress of pregnancy can sometimes lead to a person first becoming aware they have TTP.
Recently, Dr. Zheng and colleagues wrote guidelines for managing people with TTP, including pregnant women. A free pdf copy of those best practices can be obtained at https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/jth.15009
